Why did you choose Richmond?

Richmond was originally my third choice college, behind my Early Decision 1 and Early Decision 2 colleges. After getting deferred from my Early Decision 1 college, I was set to go to my Early Decision 2 college if I was admitted. However, after revisiting my Early Decision 2 college two weeks before it released its decision, I recognized why I liked Richmond so much: because of its welcoming, supportive, collaborative community. As soon as I walked onto UR's campus, I saw a tight-knit community of students and professors who all said hello to one another as they walked by. Everyone knew each other as friends. I also was lucky enough to speak with the admissions representative who visited my high school when I came to UR, and I was very appreciative and pleasantly surprised when he took a break from his work to speak with me and welcome me to campus. I remember that he was not intimidating, but that I felt comfortable speaking with him despite my nerves. Today, I choose Richmond for those same reasons. I enjoy walking to class because I'll always run into someone I know who gives me a nice hello, even if I just met them once. The professors and staff are all welcoming and willing to go out of their way to help out students. During my first semester at UR, I asked one of my professors if I could reserve a room to hold a study group for another course and he graciously opened the doors for me and my peers and even came by to make sure we were doing well with our studying and give us a snack break. Ultimately, walking around UR does not feel like walking around a college campus to me — it feels like home. Between the beautiful buildings, and, more importantly, the neighborly students and faculty, I feel comfortable and I know I'm in the place for me.
